Creating a Minimalist Aesthetic in Your Home

“Less Is More” in the words of celebrated Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe who was a key figure in the minimalism movement and is also one of the fathers of modern architecture.

What is Minimalist Design?

A simple description would be using the fewest and barest essentials or elements, in design. Although minimalism is certainly not a lavish style, but it is not an absence of design either. Minimalism is the ability to strip away the non-essentials without affecting its purpose or identity. Minimalism is mastering the use of open space and the use of negative space.

Minimalist Design Today

It is all about utilizing clean, simple shapes and color palettes. Removing clutter and non-essentials keeping only things that improve the function of your space.

Here are a few tips to creating Minimalist Interior

  1. Clear all surfaces of any clutter.

  2. Pick pieces for how you live in your space- Items with storage give you the ability to hide any clutter

  3. Abide by less is more

  4. Keep colors neutral and build visual interest with different textures.

  5. If you prefer more color use less texture to and stick with varying shades of one color.

  6. Choose quality items over quantity.

  7. Infuse your space with lots of natural light.

  8. Live simply but better.

A good idea when finishing your room is to stand back and look at it like you would an outfit. I think the rule according to Coco Chanel was “look in the mirror and take one thing off.” This will keep your room from looking too styled.
